Many amateur golfers spend most practice time at the driving range, focusing on hitting the ball far. However, the short game—chipping, pitching, and putting—actually determines your scores. Professional golfers know that you drive for show, but putt for dough. Improving your short game is the most efficient way to lower your handicap.
Understanding Short Game Distances
The short game typically encompasses shots within 100 yards of the green. This includes full wedge shots, partial wedges, chips, and pitches. Most golfers face far more short game shots during a round than long drives, making this area crucial for scoring.
Chipping Fundamentals
Chipping is a short, controlled shot played from near the green. The key to good chipping is consistency and control rather than power. Position the ball towards your back foot, keep your hands ahead of the ball at address, and use a pendulum motion with your arms and shoulders.
The most important principle is choosing the right club. Rather than always using the same chip club, select the club that allows the ball to land on the green quickly and roll the remaining distance to the hole. This "land and roll" approach is more reliable than trying to stop the ball precisely.

Short game shots carry more pressure because the outcome directly affects your score. Develop a consistent pre-shot routine: visualise the shot, take practice swings, address the ball, and execute. This routine builds confidence and consistency.
Practice Strategy
Effective short game practice differs from range practice. Rather than hitting random shots, set specific targets and keep score. For example, hit 10 chips from 20 yards and count how many finish within 6 feet of the hole. This purposeful practice develops real skills.
Key Practice Drills
- The ladder drill: Place balls at increasing distances (10, 15, 20, 25 yards) and chip to a target, moving back after each success.
- The circle drill: Pitch balls to a green and count how many land within a 10-foot circle.
- Pressure putting: Make 10 consecutive putts from 3 feet, starting over if you miss.
